Hank Bardenhagen Woodturner Hank Bardenhagen, woodturner, prefers to use wood from local species of trees that have come down due to age or disease and to make functional pieces. From the downed tree a log is re-cut so a bowl can be rough-turned to its approximate shape. The bowl is then allowed to age for a year or so, so that it dries out naturally. It’s then re-turned to its final dimensions and a finish appropriate for use is applied. Little of the original wood is wasted. The remaining smaller pieces of the tree are used for ikebanas (flower arrangers), peppermills, bottle stoppers and the like. The shavings are used by a local potter or as mulch. I enjoy sharing my love of woodturning by teaching various levels of classes in Milwaukee and at The Clearing Folk Art School in Door County, WI. My turnings are sold in several galleries in Wisconsin and Illinois.
